My Wood Badge ticket
Here is my ticket, which was approved on August 6, 2004. That means I
had until February 6, 2006 to finish it, which I did.
Summary
- Teach the rifle shooting merit badge to a group of Scouts
(complete).
- Become certified in CPR by the Red Cross or a similar organization
(complete).
- Go on a Cub Scout or Webelos outdoor outing (complete).
- Make audio recordings of three Eagle-required merit badge books
(complete).
- Participate as an adult advisor in four troop backpacking
outings (complete).
Details
These are the notes from my ticket worksheets, mainly so I don't lose
them.
Ticket item 1
- Goal:
- Teach the rifle shooting merit badge to a group of Scouts.
- Who:
- Scouts in Troop 171 and possibly others who are interested.
- What:
- Teach each requirement of the merit badge.
- Where:
- At the troop meeting location and at a rifle range.
- When:
- Classroom sessions in the beginning of October 2004, range time at
the end of October 2004.
- How:
- By preparing and giving classes with the assistance of other
instructors. By finding qualified leaders and using them to help me run
the range.
- Why:
- I have not yet taught these skill to others. Previously, helping
Scouts with shooting has been effective and rewarding.
- How verified:
- Compare what I have taught with the requirements.
- Comments:
- Complete. I did classroom instruction during troop meetings in
September 2004. We went to the shooting range on October 9. Nine Scouts
participated. One Scout completed the merit badge. I was assisted by
John Gonsalves.
Ticket item 2
- Goal:
- Become certified in CPR by the Red Cross or a similar
organization, and teach it to another group once.
- Who:
- Myself.
- What:
- Attend a class and complete all requirements necessary for
certification.
- Where:
- At the training facility.
- When:
- Before June 2005.
- How:
- By attending a class and completing the course work.
- Why:
- To increase my knowledge and ability. To be able to teach CPR more
authoritatively.
- How verified:
- Receipt of certification.
- Status:
- I took a CPR certification class on April 17, 2005. I taught a CPR
lesson at my troop's family camp on August 13.
Ticket item 3
- Goal:
- Go on a Cub Scout or Webelos outdoor outing.
- Who:
- A Cub Scout or Webelos pack or den.
- What:
- Attend an outing and assist the leadership in conducting activities.
Give the young Scouts a positive impression of Scouting.
- Where:
- At a local outdoor location
- When:
- By Spring 2005.
- How:
- By getting to know the Scouts before the outing. By accompanying
them on their activities.
- Why:
- To learn more about Cub Scouting. To set a good example of Boy
Scouts.
- How verified:
- Approval of Cub Scout leader.
- Status:
- Complete. I worked with a Webelos den to help them earn the
Outdoorsman pin. I and Scouts from my troop discussed camping gear, fire
safety, and Leave No Trace at a den meeting. I then accompanied the den
on a three-mile hike where we tied knots and had a campfire.
Ticket item 4
- Goal:
- Make an audio recording of three Eagle-required merit badge
books.
- Who:
- Myself, with LuWanda Ford.
- What:
- Record the text of merit badge books for Scouts who have difficulty
reading, with direction from project leaders.
- Where:
- When:
- By July 2005.
- How:
- By following guidelines set by the project leaders. By taking the
time to do a good job.
- Why:
- For the unique experience, and to help Scouts who may be
under-considered.
- How verified:
- Approval by LuWanda Ford.
- Status:
- Complete. I've completed all the recordings and sent them to
LuWanda.
Ticket item 5
- Goal:
- Participate as an adult leader in four troop backpacking
outings.
- Who:
- Scouts and adult leaders in my troop.
- What:
- Serve as an advisor when necessary to help plan four backpacking
outings and then go on the trip.
- Where:
- At troop meetings and on hiking trails.
- When:
- On average, one trip every three months for a year.
- How:
- By being available to help plan. By teaching skills before and
during outings. By seeing that outings are planned well in advance.
- Why:
- Backpacking is fun and I am good at it. Scouts have told me that it
enriches their Scouting experience.
- How verified:
- By keeping track of the outings I go on.
- Status:
- Complete. We did four backpackers plus a Philmont trek.
